In 2007, I entered the unknown when I began as a junior at Meredith College in the fall. At the time I was a single-mom with a six-month old daughter and was at least an hour away from most of my family.
My life during those years especially, is a testament to none other than God’s grace and protection. As a full time student and mother, I really struggled with working at night because I wanted to be home with my daughter. Throughout my first year at Meredith, I took on several cleaning jobs which turned out to be such a blessing as I developed a relationship with those families who have now turned into life-long friends. God has a plan in everything! Although those jobs were helpful, I still needed to look for ways to make some extra money in college. With some wholesale and retail experience under my belt, Specialty Design Company was born.
I took baby steps for my business in college; passing out
catalogs, and selling at craft shows and holiday events. Family and friends
quickly picked up on my product line and my customer base started building. I
graduated as a Meredith Angel in 2009 with a degree in Family and Consumer
Sciences. My desire was to teach Family
and Consumer Science classes for students in middle school and high school. And
yet again, God’s grace and protection landed me in a completely different area.
With my degree, I gained knowledge in Fashion, Interior Design, Foods and
Nutrition, and Child Development. The
least likely career path that I had chosen for myself turned out to be the most
promising and the dearest to my heart at this time. Fresh out of college, I landed a job as Assistant
Director at a well-known child care facility in downtown Raleigh. Thanks to my
director there, my passion for child development was enhanced and I learned
more than I could have ever dreamed about management and operating a business. I was able to work with 62 wonderful children
every day while I soaked up every bit of knowledge.
Nearly 2 years later, I found myself about to get
married! In March 2011, I married my childhood friend after knowing him since elementary school. Moving back home proved to
be God’s plan for me all along. I got another amazing job in the child care
field at a local non-profit organization that focuses on all children entering
school healthy and prepared for success. God has truly blessed my family and my career.
Me, my husband
Sean, and our daughter Georgia Anne, currently live in our hometown, where
Specialty Design Company really came to life. Luckily, I get to do something that I love, surrounded by family and friends and lots of support! For the past 2 years, we have hit the Facebook
market hard, building a customer base, and getting ready for the day when this
website could be published! It is a
proud day but a humble day for me. As I look back on what life has put in my
path, and I think of everything that I have to be grateful for.
One verse repeatedly comes to mind when I think of how grateful I am for all the opportunities given to me:
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.’
Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)
